A strong earthquake measuring 6.8 in magnitude struck central Morocco and killed at least 820 people, according to the country’s Interior Ministry.

The epicenter was located in the High Atlas mountains, 71 kilometers southwest of Marrakech, at a depth of 18.5 km, according to the U.S. Geological Service.

The victims were in Marrakech and in various areas to the south, the ministry reported.
Many of the deaths are believed to have occurred in remote and hard-to-reach areas.
